BOYS BASKETBALL

WILLIAMSPORT -- With injured teammate Stephen Christy on the sideline watching in a wheelchair, Williamsport found some inner strength on Friday night and responded with a 63-49 victory over Liberty.

Christy, a 6-foot-5 junior expected to be one of the top players in Washington County this season, was injured in a fall Tuesday against Frederick and suffered fractures to the lumbar spinal cord.

"Obviously his teammates played with heavy hearts with (Christy) on the sidelines," said Williamsport coach Scott Mowbray.

It is likely Christy will miss the entire season, although his condition will be evaluated by medical personnel in six weeks.

On the floor, Williamsport (3-0) steamed past Liberty once it got in gear.

Brandon McCauley came off the bench in the second quarter and scored six points that helped give the Wildcats a 31-25 lead. In the third quarter, Trey Malott had 10 of his 14 points as Williamsport moved out to a 51-34 lead.

Guard Connor Arnone stepped up with a 19-point effort and also had five assists.

"(Arnone) has started the year real well," said Mowbray. "He does all the little things well. Tonight he took three offensive charges that gave us momentum."

Guard Xavier Green added 11 points for the 'Cats. Trey Parsons led Liberty (1-2) with 22 points.
