HCC class collects items for Humane Society

December 12, 2009

Hagerstown Community College students from Professor Loretta J. Thornhill's Legal Environment of Business course recently incorporated their love of animals into a class project that involved collecting items for homeless animals.

On Dec. 3, they donated two carloads of items to the Humane Society of Washington County.

The course is designed to provide an in-depth examination of the various outside influences that affect business activities. Students were put into groups and were to choose a charity to positively impact.

Onelia Rodgriguez, Joel Cerda, Connor Buchannan, Katlyn Patrey, Dawn Wisz and Travis Burger chose the Humane Society.

Using the Humane Society's wish list, they collected items by placing boxes on campus and at their workplaces, as well as at the workplaces of family members. A three-week collection period resulted in a large number of items and a cash donation of $65 for the shelter.

"We really appreciate the students working so hard to help out those less fortunate," said Humane Society Executive Director Paul Miller. "At this time of the year, it is easy to get involved in holiday shopping and preparation, but they certainly didn't let that happen."
