John C. Martin Sr., 87

FROSTBURG, Md. - John C. Martin Sr., 87, of Frostburg, died on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at the Western Maryland Regional Health Center.

Born on April 17, 1922, in Mount Savage, Md., he was the son of the late Guy and Esther (Dickel) Martin. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Mae (Keidel) Martin, in 1991; his daughter, Bonnie Mae Cox; his sister, Virginia Winebrenner; stepson, Daniel Lee Rafferty; and two brothers, Guy E. Martin and James Martin.

Mr. Martin was a United States Veteran, serving in the Army during World War II, surviving the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church, a member of the Cumberland Post 1411 VFW, Frostburg Farrady Post 24 A.L., Cumberland Moose 243, Cumberland Eagles Aerie 245 and the Frostburg Senior Citizens.

Mr. Martin was a graduate of Mount Savage High School and Frostburg State University. He taught at Fort Hill High School and Washington Middle School, and retired from the Board of Education in 1982.

Surviving are his wife, Helen (Turner); four sons, John C. Martin Jr. & wife Donna of Cumberland, Ronald T. Martin & wife Cindy of Great Cacapon, W.Va. (formerly of Myersville, Md.), Timothy Martin & wife Karen of LaVale, Md., and Roger Martin of Woodsboro, Md.; two stepsons, James W. Rafferty of Colorado and Larry David Rafferty of Frostburg, Md.; a step-daughter, Robin Martz of LaVale; sisters, Norma Stewart of Wellersburg, Pa., and Anna Lee Femi of Mount Savage; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Sunday, Dec. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will conducted at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary on Monday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Rebecca Vardiman officiating. Interment will follow at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
