MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- After several days of successful snow-making, Whitetail Resort will open for skiing and snowboarding today at 8:30 a.m.

The resort invested more than $1.7 million in capital improvements this year, including 24 new energy-efficient Areco snowmaking fan guns.

Cold weather this week has given the resort ample opportunity to make snow with its new guns, marketing coordinator Matt See said.

The entire staff is ready for the 2009-2010 season, resort president Don MacAskill said.

"We are all very excited for the skiing and snowboarding season here on the mountain," MacAskill said. "With all of the improvements we have undertaken, the entire staff is looking forward to serving guests across the region at our resort."

Whitetail hosted a job fair in November to hire additional staff.

The resort, which hired for approximately 200 jobs this fall, is one of Franklin County's largest employers in the winter.

See said the work force at Whitetail fluctuates from fewer than 100 people in the summer to more than 1,000 people in the winter.

Improvements kept Whitetail busy through the summer when it began work on its capital improvement plan, which also included a beginner terrain park called Park Place, a new half-pipe in the Jib Junction Terrain Park and a 400-foot adult beginner carpet lift.

Approximately sevens trail and five lifts will open today for skiing and snowboarding. For advanced or freestyle skiers and snowboarders, the Jib Junction Terrain park will be open today with two or three trails. Park Place will not open this weekend.

Snow tubing will not be open this weekend. See said tubing will open at a later date.
