Mail Call

December 11, 2009

"I was just driving through Hagerstown, and it's no wonder we have the traffic tie-ups that we have. People have no idea how to follow directions. I see numerous people make left-hand and right-hand turns on the side streets from the middle lane, instead of getting in the right- and left-hand turn lanes. They're driving in areas that are marked as not supposed to drive in."

- Hagerstown

"I was calling in about the caller from Hagerstown that said 'I was in Baltimore on Wednesday and gas was 20 cents cheaper than what it is around Hagerstown.' The reason for that is it's because gas comes in on ships. They load the trucks, then they got to distribute it further up north, like where I live at in Blue Ridge, in Fairfield. That's the reason why the prices are higher up here."

- Fairfield, Pa.

"To the person that was on East Franklin Monday night, going way too fast: I hope my cat did not slow you down too much. As for me and my wife, we took time to dig a grave and hold our friend while he took his last breath. Now we need to take more time to tell our grandson why his mowmow is not here to play with. Please slow down. Next time it could be a child."

"Why is it everywhere I drive around and see all this work going on in Hagerstown - line painting, sidewalks, things like that - none of the companies are from Hagerstown? I would like an explanation from the City Council as to why you're not hiring people that are paying your salary."

- Hagerstown

"Are you frustrated with all the noisy pre-Christmas crowds shopping all over town? Why is this most beautiful season observed by things unrelated to the birth of Christ, like Santa Claus and so forth? Santa Claus, bells, lights, candy canes, etc., are hardly the real reason for Christmas - or are they? Perhaps we don't look at it with real meaning for Christmas."

- Hagerstown

"To the lady that keeps putting in the Mail Call that Sarah Palin's was marked down to $4.99 is an error. It's $4.99 if you buy four magazines. You have to subscribe to those four magazines to get the book for $4.99. I just want make sure that they know that the book is not $4.99. You get four subscriptions to four different (magazines)."

- State Line, Pa.

"I just want to comment that George W. Bush was a great president. He got Saddam Hussein for the 9/11 attack of the World Trade Center. He did his best to take care of the victims of Hurricane Katrina. He rounded up most of the world's worst terrorists and sent them to the Cuban prison. He tried to save Social Security by putting it in the stock market, and he stopped the price of gas from going over $4 a gallon. Thank you, George W. Bush."

- Hagerstown

"In Mail Call on Dec. 8, there was two items about Sarah Palin, one of cost of her book. I paid $24 for mine. It was worth the cost. I like Sarah Palin. She's intelligent, she was a good governor for Alaska. Democrats are trying to destroy her. She would be good for America. I'm a Democrat."

- Williamsport

"Several months ago, the president suggested that the senior citizens receive a check for $250 to help make up for the COLA that we're not gonna receive this year. Can we expect to receive this, and if so, when?"

- Hagerstown

"I'd just like to say why does Obama say he wants bipartisanship, when he only meets with Democrats, behind closed doors? Why are his meetings not on C-SPAN, and where is the transparency regarding the health care? Do we really want $500 billion in Medicare cuts? Why is AARP going along with this? Why is anyone going along with this?"

- Hancock

"To the guy from Montgomery County: Go back to Montgomery County, because your ugliness is twice as bad as any girl in Washington County, and that's without even seeing a picture of you."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the Sharpsburg caller: ... We have very attractive women and men in Washington County, and I'm tired of hearing people saying that the state of Maryland, especially Hagerstown, has ugly people."

- Hagerstown

"I see in yesterday's paper where the City of Hagerstown council people was supposed to have a meeting with three representatives of the state. Mr. Munson and Donoghue and all of you, when you have a meeting with the city, you need to tell the city that they need to make cuts like the state is, some employee cuts."

- Hagerstown

"It's Wednesday, Dec. 9, just after 7:00, and we had all this snow and ice, and the Washington County school board didn't even have the common sense to delay schools even an hour. The school bus came into my neighborhood today and slid. Now, if we had an hour or two to get the roads ready, this wouldn't have happened. ... Mark my words, in the next couple weeks or next month or so, we're going to have a forecast of a major storm that never comes, but schools will be canceled."

- Boonsboro
