JEFFERSON, Md. - Joseph L. Williams Sr., 75, of Jefferson, Md., passed away peaceably on Dec. 8, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the beloved husband of Lilyan Williams for 51 years.

Born in Winchester, Va., on June 15, 1934, he was the son of the late Charles F. Williams and Rena May Williams.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving family, son Jody and daughter-in-law, Bridget, of Shannondale, W.Va.; daughter Maryann Brown and son-in-law Bill Brown of Martinsburg, W.Va.; grandson Brett Brown and wife Paula Brown of Sharpsburg, Md.; granddaughter Billie Jo McTighe and husband Pat of Hagerstown, Md.; and two adored great-granddaughters, Hannah Brown and Brenna McTighe. He was Pappy to his special girl, Ayiana Redden of Tybee Island, Ga., and Stuart Mumaw of Warrenton, Va.; and nephew, Mark Hayward of Chambersburg, Pa. He is also survived by two sisters, Martha Layden and husband John of Winchester, Va., and Helen Farrell Land and husband Edward; and one brother, Donnie.


Joe was employed by ESSROC Cement Co. of Buckeystown, Md., for 38 years until his retirement in 1995.

He was a longtime member of Jefferson United Methodist Church, Frederick Elks Club and Brunswick Moose.

He will be remembered by his special friends, Dean and Wayde Harper of Jefferson, and Tim and Joyce Mumaw of Warrenton.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, camping for many years, cruising trips, traveling with Hagerstown friends, and visiting casinos.

Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Jefferson United Methodist Church, with Pastor Paul Papp officiating. The family will receive friends at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, U.S. 340 at Halltown Road, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry, W.Va., on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Private interment in Jefferson United Methodist Church Cemetery will be at a later date.
