BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Hale E. Andrews, 82, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., passed from this world on Dec. 7, 2009. He was at home surrounded by his beloved family.

Born to Earle T. and Rosalie Exline Andrews in 1927, he graduated valedictorian from Mercersburg Academy and summa cum laude from Princeton University as a civil engineer. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II (1945-46).

Andrews retired from Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corp. in 1985 after a 35-year career, serving for the last 17 years as president and CEO. A former president of the National Industrial Sand Association and member of the Board of Regents of Mercersburg Academy, Hale served in various local and state organizations, the West Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, Boy Scouts of America, Morgan County Commission on Aging, Civil Air Patrol and other aviation organizations. He served on the board of Citizen's National Bank, Berkeley Springs from 1954 until retirement as chairman in 1999.


Hale was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Fred Andrews. He is survived by his sister, Pat Middlekauff; his wife of 41 years, Luella; four children, Kevan Namay, Earle and Doug Andrews, and Kip Omps; three stepchildren, Donald, Leonard and Steve Ford; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Leading an active and interesting life, Hale was a longtime aviation enthusiast, and was particularly fond of aerobatic flying, owning a number of different aircraft throughout the years. He also enjoyed competitive pistol shooting and was a licensed amateur radio operator. In his later years, Hale built and flew radio-control model helicopters.

Andrews was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Berkeley Springs and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, 49 S. Green St., Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Andrew Cooney officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made to Youth Missions of the First United Methodist Church of Berkeley Springs, 49 S. Hale was loved and will be missed by all.
