Mail Call

December 08, 2009

"During Thanksgiving dinner, a teacher friend of mine told me that the school board in Washington County wants to renegotiate teachers' 3 percent raise for this upcoming year. She said the union planned to fight the board on this issue, and at my job, I'm lucky to get a 1 percent raise this coming year, secondary, you know, to the horrible economy. Doesn't the union, you know, read the newspapers or see the news? For educated people, the unions sure are stupid. I should be a teacher and get taken, well taken care of by the BOE. I'm not sure what the issue is."

- Hagerstown

"What Obama should have done with all dignitaries - and he's made this mistake before - he should say 'On behalf of myself and my wife and the American people, welcome to the White House.' The White House belongs to the American people. He is saying 'On behalf of my wife and myself, welcome ...' He's starting to sound like he forgot all about the American people. Please print it correctly this time."

"I have been on the dating scene for five years, since I moved up here from Montgomery County to Washington County. After these five years I've - it didn't take me long to realize that the Washington County girls are rough-looking women. They have to be one of the ugliest women in the state of Maryland, Washington County."

- Sharpsburg

"The caller that said that Obama, on welcoming the foreign dignitary to the White House, I would say Obama was perfectly well to say what he said, because if a renter is renting a house, he could say 'Welcome to my house.' He doesn't have to include the landlord. Just a thought."

"This is for the lady who was so helpful on Wednesday at the emergency entrance. If there would more angels like yourself, what a wonderful world we would live in. Thank you, from my husband and myself. Be proud."

- Boonsboro

"I'm calling about I'm watching C-SPAN, where the Democrats refused, knocked down, to take, not take the 500 billion off of Medicare. I've been paying all my life, I'm 70 years old. Now they want me to pay for somebody that never paid a penny for their insurance. I don't think that's right to take it away from people paid it all their life to give it to somebody that never paid one penny. I tell you, when election time comes, you better remember who voted for what because they're stepping all over the people that's retired and paid in all their life."

- Hagerstown

"You hear the immigrants, both legal and illegal, say this is a great country to live in, but you never hear them say it's a great place to work."

- Hagerstown

"Why do a lot of these TV programs and commercials want me to go to my computer and check it out, and not watch TV anymore? Isn't that counterproductive? 'Check it out on the Web.' Even the local TV cable does it."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the comment about cursive writing. There's nothing wrong with learning cursive writing, and it's a shame that parents today don't appreciate having their kids learn something."

- Hagerstown

"For the person responding to a comment made about Sarah Palin: First of all, you're not a Democrat if you consider her to be a very intelligent person and ... that's really the only point to make. I think you're the only person in the world who's called her an intelligent person."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to respond to a Friday, Dec. 4, piece on Mail Call from a person from Hagerstown. Mail Caller said that Palin's book was, must be hogwash because the book's marked down to $4.99, so Democrats or Republicans ... read it. Well, I hope you get your story straight. Book sells for $29.95 or 30 bucks, which it's $4.95 off the Internet ... so the book don't sell for $4.99 like you're saying, so get your story straight. And I will read the book."

- Hagerstown

"I was just wondering, I took down a big load of coats and cold-weather clothing to the Union Rescue shelter yesterday and found that it was closed, and was just wondering if anybody knew why. Usually I donate things every year in the fall, winter and spring."

- Hagerstown

"I was in Baltimore on Wednesday, and the gas was 20 cents cheaper than it is in Hagerstown. Something is wrong in this town with the gas prices. If someone could please look into that, I would surely appreciate it."

- Hagerstown

"I agree with everyone about County Commissioner Barr spending money to go to China. That money could have (been) spent on keeping - or helping to keep the Sideling Hill exhibit center open. Come on, legislators in Western Maryland, fight for the welcome centers. We have none left whatsoever in Western Maryland. What's wrong with this picture?"

- Hagerstown

"Being talked about before leaving the porch: These negative opinions are a learned behavior in a family; just a way to look down on people ... Feel blessed that you were taught better."

- Warfordsburg, Pa.

"This is for the lady who wears her mother's graduation ring, class of 1925, from Washington County High School. In case you don't have a '25 yearbook, the Western Maryland room at the library has a copy. In fact, they have a huge assortment of yearbooks for all county schools. For Hagerstown, they start in 1921 to present. They even have one from 1914 called the Tattler."

- Hagerstown

"I'm the lady that called in about the lady being at the Arlen Specter meeting. You're making me look like an idiot in here because you did not finish what I said, and with the end of it just is crazy, what you just did at the end of what I said is crazy. I said she did not want this country turning into another Russia. Now what is the matter with putting that in the paper, instead of making me look like a total idiot?"

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Due to budget constraints, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off."

- Hancock
