Berkeley County man faces fleeing while DUI charge

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - An 18-year-old man crashed the vehicle he was driving more than once after a Berkeley County Sheriff's Department deputy began pursuing him Monday night near Hedgesville, W.Va., according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Devon James McDaniel of Bunker Hill, W.Va., was arraigned Tuesday morning by Magistrate W. Randy Smith on one count of fleeing in a vehicle while driving under the influence, according to court records.

McDaniel was arrested after the gold Ford Thunderbird he was driving became disabled after he crashed it for the second time on Cannon Hill Road, according to a criminal complaint by Deputy M.L. Buracker.

The pursuit began on Hedgesville Road (W.Va. 9) at 8:27 p.m. when the vehicle nearly ran into the Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co. station while traveling east into the Town of Hedgesville, according to court records.

A .22-caliber magnum rifle was found in the vehicle, according to the deputy's complaint.
