Northern Middle students participate in peer mediation training

December 07, 2009

A group of Northern Middle School students in grades six through eight participated in peer mediation training at Claud Kitchens Outdoor School at Fairview on Oct. 1 and 2.

The training was led by Jennifer Ainault, mediation trainer from the Washington County Mediation Center, and Barbara Brochal, deputy director for the Schools Conflict Resolution Education Program, Center for Dispute Resolution at the University of Maryland School of Law.

The training was made possible through a grant from the University of Maryland School of Law. Officials hope the skills and insights the students acquired during the training will help them settle conflicts peacefully among their peers and support the social well-being of all students at Northern Middle.

On Oct. 15, the Northern Middle School eighth-grade WEB team sponsored a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

All students and staff were encouraged to wear pink and donate $1 to the fundraiser. Donations totaled $217, with proceeds split between the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation and WEB activities that promote the academic and social well-being of Northern Middle students.
