Youth hockey players tour Navy ship

December 05, 2009

The Hagerstown Youth Hockey Association Squirt team, a group of 9-10-year-olds, took a tour of the guided missile frigate Elrod at the Norfolk Navy Station while on a recent road trip to Hampton Roads, Va.

The players and parents were hosted by Chief Petty Officer Dwight Fleagle, a 1990 graduate of South Hagerstown High School. The Elrod is a multipurpose escort vessel deployed for the protection of amphibious groups, convoys and underway replenishment forces.

The players and their family members had the opportunity to learn about the ship's history, mission and some of the jobs performed by the crew. The team showed their appreciation by giving Chief Fleagle a Bulldog ball cap.
