Clear Spring High FBLA members take trip to York

December 05, 2009

On Nov. 12, the Clear Spring High School FBLA visited York College of Pennsylvania.

Adding a side of business to the trip - after all, FBLA does stand for Future Business Leaders of America - the group also toured the Wolfgang Candy factory.

York College has programs ranging from nursing to French, and it specializes in business master degrees, something especially appealing to a business leadership group.

From the college, the group went to the Wolfgang Candy factory, which remains the same today as it was in the early 1900s when it began.

The processes in which the candy makers create their candy have not changed, with the exception of the robotics installed in the nut clusters room in order to increase productivity.

The woman the group watched make chocolate-covered raisins did it with a spoon and her hand as did the many women before her.

The group walked through the various buildings, from packaging to chocolate melting, and even stopped to look down the long cooling tunnel which cools the different candies before they are packaged.

The Wolfgang Candy factory has approximately 200 workers, including full time, part-time, seasonal and temps for its three shifts of operation.
