Final-bout pin moves Wildcats past Warriors

Final-bout pin moves Wildcats past Warriors

WILLIAMSPORT -- As expected, the Williamsport wrestling team picked up a pair of victories in a season-opening MVAL Antietam tri-meet with Boonsboro and South Hagerstown on Saturday.

Unexpectedly, Boonsboro gave Williamsport, the defending Washington County champion, all it could handle. The Warriors, who beat South 51-28 in the day's first match, led the Wildcats 36-35 with one bout left in the second match.

Spencer Nally came through for the Wildcats in the final bout at 189 pounds, pinning Boonsboro's Kurt McIlwee in 38 seconds to give his team a 41-36 win.

"I wasn't nervous at all," Nally said. "The last time it came down to me being a match-decider, I pinned the guy in 32 seconds (last season against Fort Hill).

"I knew Boonsboro was going to bring their 'A' game today, but I never thought it was going to come down to the last match."

In the day's most exciting bout, Bobby Harwood overcame a 6-2 third-period deficit against Williamsport's Bobby Ardinger at 135, scoring a pin in 5:48 to give Boonsboro a 30-16 lead with six bouts left.

"The thing I'm most proud of is my kids' mentality," said first-year Warriors coach Larry Sprecher, whose assistant is former Williamsport superstar Mike McGill. "They wrestled hard and didn't quit."

Williamsport won the next four bouts to take a 35-30 lead, getting a major decision from Nate Tyson at 140, pins by Joey Sutch at 145 and Zach Shoemaker at 152 and a decision from Reggie Russ at 160.

Jon Best answered with a pin for Boonsboro at 171 as the Warriors took a 36-35 lead with one bout left, setting the stage for Nally.

"Boonsboro came ready to wrestle," Williamsport coach Mike Rechtorovic said. "They wrestled well, and we didn't. Some of our kids weren't ready to wrestle and got woken up a little bit. It's nice to not wrestle well and still sneak away with a win."

The Wildcats certainly seemed ready for South in the day's final match as they rolled to a 67-9 victory.

Austin Loar (103), Killian Baker (119), Kemper Baker (130), Tyson (140), Sutch (145), Shoemaker (152), Russ (160) and Nally (189) each went 2-0 on the day for the Wildcats, while Josh Weyant (112), George Ardinger (125), Bobby Ardinger (135) and Dylan Footen (215) each went 1-1. Kemper Baker, Shoemaker and Nally each had two pins.

Kevin Murphy (125), Best (171) and Scott Haupt (215) each had two pins for Boonsboro, while Nathaniel Proce (112) and Bobby Harwood (135) also each went 2-0, David Wilbraham (140) was 1-0 and Travis Boreni (119), Joe Minoglio (130), Stephen Miller (160) and Josh Harwood (285) each went 1-1.

For South, Dustin Rowland (285) was 2-0, while Jonta Bishop (103), Eric Davis (145), David Savage (152), Chris Collins (171) and Michael Moroz (189) each went 1-1.

"I've got no complaints. My kids wrestled their hearts out," said South first-year coach Donnie Rowland. "I'd rather not be 0-2, but we'll just keep getting better and better each week. The majority of my lineup is new, and there's a lot of stuff we need to work on. The potential is there. I'm excited."
