Chambersburg man killed in Franklin County crash

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- A Franklin County man was killed Friday morning in a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Mt. Rock and Possum Hollow roads in Southampton Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Jonathan D. Richards, 20, of Chambersburg, Pa., died in the accident that occurred at about 8 a.m., police said in a news release.

The names of the other people involved in the crash were not available as of 10 p.m. Friday.

The accident occurred when a passenger vehicle attempted to make a left turn onto Possum Hollow Road while traveling north on Mt. Rock Road, police said. A work van driven by Richards was approaching the passenger vehicle from the rear went it went left of center and struck an oncoming dump truck head-on, police said.

All three vehicles caught fire, police said.

Two of the drivers were able to climb from their vehicles and had minor injuries, but Richards died at the scene, police said.

Debris from the crash struck another vehicle that was waiting at the intersection. The driver of that vehicle was not injured, police said.

Shippensburg West End Fire and Rescue and the Franklin County coroner also responded to the scene.
