Thumbs up, thumbs down

December 04, 2009

Thumbs up To Scott Stevens and Boy Scouts from Maugansville Troop 64 for organizing the Country Gospel Concert by Tim Moffitt at Christ's Reformed Church. The concert helped raise money and food donations for the Community Food Bank at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown. They took in 37 boxes full of food for the food bank.

Thumbs up To Lynn Jones and the South Washington County Military Support Group for compiling 540 boxes of cards, phones, personal hygiene items and other goodies that are being shipped to our troops fighting for our freedoms overseas. Also, kudos to those who donated items and money to the cause.

Thumbs down To the White House security staff for allowing the Virginia couple into a state dinner at the White House. With all the advances in technology and the increased level of security at airports, courthouses and even retail stores, a breach like this is unforgivable and frankly, a little unnerving.

Thumbs up To all the local area artists, and Howard's Arts Supplies and Frames, for sponsoring the fourth annual Art for the Animals Challenge. For this event, artists from the Tri-State area submitted nearly 100 pieces of original artwork, custom framed and mounted, then placed on silent auction. Proceeds were in excess of $1,100, all of which went to the Humane Society of Washington County. Great job!

Thumbs up To the Washington County Commissioners, who are keeping the ball rolling on recycling. On Tuesday, they heard from a company called RecycleBank, which rewards households for recycling. The more people recycle, the more rewards they receive.

Thumbs up To The Maryland Theatre for offering a nice range of holiday treats for residents to enjoy this holiday season. Among the seasonal chestnuts: The Nutcracker on Dec. 12 and 13, A Christmas Carol on Dec. 16 and Maryland Symphony Orchestra holiday concerts on Dec. 19 and 20.

Thumbs up To members of the Martinsburg, W.Va., squadron of the Civil Air Patrol who helped in the search for an aircraft that went missing Nov. 23. Crews from the Clarksburg, W.Va., Composite Squadron of the West Virginia Wing Civil Air Patrol eventually found the downed place on Tuesday.

Thumbs up To organizers and supporters of the Healthy Smiles Community Oral Health Clinic that opens Monday in Martinsburg, W.Va. The clinic is an offshoot of the Mission of Mercy (M.O.M.) events in 2008 and 2009 and shows how a small group with a good idea can have a great impact on many people.
