Mail Call

December 03, 2009

"When is head coach Jim Zorn of the Washington Redskins going to wake up and realize his team has to score touchdowns to beat good teams? I watched the last two games and knew that they were going to lose, because field goals won't do it against good NFL teams. They could have won both games with a few more points. How frustrated his players and fans must be."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"The Clear Spring caller, about the bumper sticker: I, too, fear my government when it's the government of George Bush. I fear it and I also hate it. Also, to those about GM and making a profit, they're making a new car and they're gonna have it made - a new model - and they're gonna have it made in Canada. How about that for our taxpayers now?"

- Hagerstown

"I don't know who this Gen. Hartle is, but I want to thank the person who called in and said that Hagerstown High School didn't come into existence until 1926. You made me look at my mother's graduation ring - which I haven't examined in quite a little while, despite wearing it every day, 24 hours a day - and it says 'Washington County High School 1925.' That must have been the last year that the county high school existed."

"I want to make a comment about the welfare thing. Welfare doesn't give you money anymore, and they have a job program where you have to go out and look for a job, and you have to do it every day, and you have to keep track of it. If you're lucky, the only thing you're gonna get from welfare is food stamps."

- Hagerstown

"Just wanted to say a word of congratulations out to everyone who put the 2009 Hollyfest together at The Maryland Theatre this year. I think it was great, particularly the act that the kids from Washington County performed, the Peanuts Gang. I particularly liked that act especially, and, like I say, good job, everybody."

"This call is in response to the lady who wanted to know if she was the only one that liked the movie 'A Christmas Story.' Tell her no, definitely not, she's not alone there. My whole family loves it, and that's about 20 people, in-laws and outlaws. Just a great classic Christmas movie. Of course, I'm easy; there's not too many Christmas movies I don't like. But yep, we like it."

"This is in response to the one that was put in the paper by someone in Hagerstown on Sunday, Nov. 29, regarding Sarah Palin. I'm a Democrat, and I would certainly read her book. I have no problem with that. I find her to be a very intelligent and beautiful person, and someone who I'd be proud to lead our country. But this person says that the people who responded to this negatively ... , he said shame, shame on them, he said most are women. I'm a woman. I'm not a jealous, green-eyed monster. Sounds to me like maybe there's a little bit of male chauvinist in that reply."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in about conservatives always whining. All they ever do is whine, 24 hours a day, on AM talk radio. They never have solutions. ... Anybody that supports Sarah Palin for president might as well support the mayor of Hancock, because that's all the experience she had was running a town about the size of Hancock, before becoming a governor for only a little over a year and quitting. The woman just constantly whines about being vilified, but no one cares about Hillary Clinton being vilified in the press."

- Hagerstown

"To my neighbors in Sterling Oaks: I deeply apologize for any disturbance I may have caused to you this past Saturday. One of my children let our dog out on our back deck before we left to go out of town. Our dog was left to bark all day. I was mortified and deeply embarrassed when we arrived home late that night. Please forgive us, and know this will not happen ever again."
