WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mr. Charles Robert Smith, 77, of 11720 Airport Road, Waynesboro, entered into eternal rest at 12:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, in the emergency room of Waynesboro Hospital. Death was attributed to a massive heart attack.

He was born March 8, 1932, on Edgemont Road near Smithsburg, Md. He was the son of the late Howard E. Sr. and Mae C. (Kline) Smith.

Mr. Smith graduated from Smithsburg High School with the class of 1950.

He and his wife of almost 58 years, Mrs. Evelyn L. (Ridenour) Smith, were married Nov. 2, 1951, in Hagerstown, Md.


Mr. Smith took his machinist trade at Chambersburg Engineering Co., and then worked for various grocery stores, both in Waynesboro and Hagerstown, as a clerk and manager, retiring in 1997. Following his retirement, he worked part time for Washington County Weed Control and for Maryland Environmental Control.

Charles was a member of St. Paul Free Lutheran Church of Leitersburg, Md., Eagles Club Inc. of Waynesboro, Waynesboro Fish and Game Association and the National AARP.

He enjoyed hunting and working outdoors.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Charles S. Smith Sr. of Smithsburg; grandson, Charles S. Smith Jr. of Smithsburg; granddaughter, Tracey Lynn Pague and husband, Paul, of Smithsburg; great-granddaughter, Lindsey B. Pague; one brother, Harold R. "Buddy" Smith of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary C. Eck; and a brother, Howard E. Smith Jr.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at St. Paul Free Lutheran Church, 21513 Leitersburg-Smithsburg Road, Hagerstown, with Pastor Terry W. Culler officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Free Lutheran Church, 21513 Leitersburg-Smithsburg Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
