BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Robert Gene Alting, age 82, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va.

Born Aug. 9, 1927, in Pottstown, Pa., he was the son of the late Jonathan Woodward and Sarah Lucetta Detwiler Alting.

He was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs.

He retired as chief of building services with Pottstown High School.

He served as seaman first class with the U.S. Navy from Feb. 19, 1945, until his honorable discharge on May 12, 1946, and was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the WWII Victory Medal. He then served as a sergeant with the U.S. Air Force from April 8, 1948, until his honorable discharge on April 3, 1950.


He and the late Mrs. Alting moved to Berkeley Springs about 25 years ago. He was very active with Senior Life Services of Morgan County, and helped build the shelving units at the new Morgan County Public Library. He was an expert Egyptologist, enjoyed surfing the Internet, was accomplished at needlepoint, and was a collector of Civil War and World War II memorabilia.

Mr. Alting is survived by two daughters, Roberta Jean Graffman and her husband, Ira, of Silver Spring, Md., and Priscilla V. Alting of Pottstown; two stepdaughters, Lorraine Canoles and Debra Schultz, both of Berkeley Springs; three sisters, Ruth Griffith Leyrer and Frances Tosto, both of Pottstown, and Gladys Griffith of Lancaster, Pa.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Thelma Brown Alting, Virginia Van Gosen Alting and Mary Lee Miller Alting; two sons, James Francis Alting and Jonathan Woodward Alting; one sister, Sarah Whitacre; and four brothers, George Griffith, Norman Griffith, Thomas Griffith and Jonathan Griffith.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Patricia Watson officiating. Family and friends, please assemble at the funeral home by 11 a.m. Thursday.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs, which will open at noon Wednesday for the convenience of family and friends.
