Delinquent water bill problem rising

SMITHSBURG -- The town of Smithsburg sent out 72 letters to town water customers for delinquent bill payments in the last billing quarter, Town Manager Betsy Martin told Smithsburg Town Council members Tuesday night.

Water service was cut to seven customers because of delinquent accounts, Martin said.

Town officials said the problem with delinquent water bill payments seems to be increasing in the struggling economy.

Mayor, council seats open next year

SMITHSBURG -- Two Smithsburg Town Council seats and the mayor's position will be up for grabs next year, town officials said at the Smithsburg Town Council meeting Tuesday night.

The two seats currently held by Dennis "Jack" Wenthe and Charles "Bud" Lucassen will be open, said Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers.

The primary election is April 26 and the general election is May 11.

Myers said she has not made up her mind about whether she will run for re-election.
