Martha K. Kemp, 88, of 13218 Briarcliff Drive, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Nov. 26, 2009, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born in Hagerstown on Jan. 30, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Elden L. Kerney and Louise M. Shifler Kerney.

She was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, and worked at Universal Credit Co. and in the accounting department of Fairchild Corp. until she married T. Aubrey Kemp on Jan. 1, 1943.

She was interested in dramatic arts and performed numerous monologues, took part in minstrels and performed in many local plays with the Potomac Playmakers.


She was a member in the Queen's Court at the National Antietam Commemoration. She was a member of Hagerstown Chapter 89, Order of the Eastern Star, and was the worthy matron of the chapter in 1950 with her husband, T. Aubrey Kemp, serving as her worthy patron, both being the youngest worthy matron and patron of the lodge.

She served as grand page of the Grand Chapter of Maryland at the Eastern Star's 53rd-anniversary session in Baltimore, Md.

She was a member of the Women's Club of Hagerstown for more than 50 years.

She was a member of Paramount Baptist Church and adult Sunday School Class No. 3.

She is survived by two nephews, David Bowers of New York City and John Bowers of Phoenix, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Aubrey Kemp, to whom she was married for 65 years. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Alice K. Bowers of Winchester, Va.

Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Dr. Larry Rickard, minister of the Paramount Baptist Church, Hagerstown, will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
