Home Town Christmas begins Sunday in Smithsburg

SMITHSBURG -- Smithsburg Home Town Christmas begins Sunday with a tree lighting. Most of the events will be Saturday, Dec. 12.

Sunday, Dec. 6

5:30 to 8 p.m.: Tree lighting at Veterans Park on Water Street. Following the tree lighting, Santa will be at the Smithsburg Fire Hall to greet children. Refreshments will be available.

Friday, Dec. 11

6 to 8 p.m.: Smithsburg Home Town Christmas house-decorating contest. The categories are residential entryway, and residential house and lawn. Members of the Smithsburg Lions Club are judging. For each category, first place wins $50; second place wins $25; and third place wins $25.

Saturday, Dec. 12

7 to 10 a.m.: Breakfast with Santa at Smithsburg Fire Hall.

1 p.m.: Chewsville United Methodist Chorus will perform at the square.

1 to 2:30 p.m.: Firetruck rides on South Main Street. Personnel from Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services will serve refreshments at the square.


1 to 3 p.m.: Crafts and live nativity scene at Trinity Lutheran Church on North Main Street.

2 p.m.: Vine Church Chorus will perform at the square.

2 to 3 p.m.: Tree decorating on the square.

3 p.m.: Smithsburg Christmas parade begins. The parade lines up at 2:30 p.m. at East School Lane. The parade will go down North Main Street, West Water Street, Maple Avenue, Bishop Lane and South Main Street, and return to East School Lane.

4:30 p.m.: Smithsburg remembrance ceremony at Smithsburg Cemetery. Candles will be given to each person at the steps to the mausoleum to take to the grave of a loved one.

4:30 to 7 p.m.: Christmas party at Smithsburg Fire Hall for ages 12 and younger. Event will feature free pictures with Santa, crafts, games and refreshments. Santa arrives at 5 p.m.
