Northstars explode for 1st win

Alex Sweeney, Kevin McCormack and Keith Koontz scored two goals each as the Washington County Northstars took control early to post a 9-1 win over Northern on Monday at the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex.

The Northstars took a 3-0 lead after the first period and used strong defense to earn their first win of the season (1-3).

"The kids played their game and played good defense," said coach Jamie Blackwood. "They keep getting better and keep showing we are a team of the future."

Sean Kreps, Brody Barbour and Andrew Green each added goals as Washington County built a 7-1 lead by the end of the second period. Goalie Alex Benda had 14 saves.

The following are the age group winners for the Turkey Trot, held at Hagerstown Community College on Nov. 26.

Ages 1-19 -- Male: Naseem Haje, 15:58; Female: Taryn Shank, 20:07; 20-29 -- Male: Dustin Adams, 16:15; Female: Jaime Wright 18:24; 30-39 -- Male: Bret Mower 16:51; Female: Danielle Mason 20:18; 40-49 -- Male: Tim Schuler 16:39; Female: Kay Harrison 21:57; 50-59 -- Male: Mike Meadows 19:09; Female: Karen St. Clair Abbamonte, 22:09; 60-69 -- Male: Matt McLaughlin 27:42; Female: Marlys Palmer 25:21; 70-99 -- Male: Larry Wink, Sr. 25:59; Female: Dolores Monninger 38:54.

The race was won by Doug Oates in 15:52. Jesse Buchman was the top female finisher in 17:15.
