Hawks go winless at Jim Brown Classic

November 30, 2009|By JACK HILL III/Staff Correspondent

HAGERSTOWN -- The Jim Brown Classic certainly didn't go as well as the Hagerstown Community College men's basketball had hoped it would as the Hawks lost both of their weekend games.

After falling 101-81 to Monroe College on Saturday night, HCC lost 93-76 to Cecil on Sunday afternoon at the HCC athletic complex.

The Hawks (3-5) committed 31 turnovers Saturday and 22 more on Sunday.

On Sunday, HCC made just seven of its 33 3-point field goal attempts for only 21 percent.

Through eight games this season, the Hawks have scored an average of 89 points a game. But they've given up an average of 94 points a game.

"We are playing a very tough early-season schedule, which is exactly what I want to do," HCC coach Barry Brown said. "If we learn from our mistakes, make the necessary adjustments and increase our intensity level, then we will get better."

Brown said he and his players know where they need to improve.

"My players know what they need to do to be successful," Brown said. "They know it all starts from the defensive end of the floor. We are not playing with the intensity or the toughness that we need to play with to beat these good teams."

Harold Washington fired in 22 points, Adam Johnson pumped in 20 points, Donn Hill added 13 points and Sebastian Sturgis had 11 points for Cecil (6-1).

"We knew that they were a good dribble-drive team, so we tried to get down in the driving lane," Cecil coach Rashad Brooks said. "For the most part, we kept them from penetrating. We just kept them from getting into the fast breaks and transitions."

Jonathan Ford had 18 points and eight assists, Raylin Mack-Brown had 15 points and seven rebounds, Najee White had 12 points and eight rebounds and Donte Stuckey had 10 points for HCC.

In the earlier game Sunday, Monroe improved to 7-2 with an 88-71 win over the Allegany Trojans (4-4).

A.J. Matthews, a 7-foot freshman center, came through with game-high totals of 25 points and eight rebounds for Monroe. Jeriel Henriquez scored 15 points, Djim Bandoumel had 12 points, Randy Dezouvre had 11 points and seven rebounds and Tyrone Lindsay also had 11 points for Monroe.

Aaron Brackett had 22 points, Dennis Bassich had 12 points and Derrell Armstrong added 10 points for Allegany.
