Teen hunter's condition stable after being shot

November 29, 2009

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. -- A 17-year-old Harpers Ferry hunter who was shot through the abdomen on Thanksgiving Day was in stable condition Sunday at Children's National Medical Center in Washington. D.C., according to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

The teenager was hunting in Jefferson County around 9:15 a.m. Thursday when he was shot as a large number of hunters in the same hunting party were driving deer, according to an e-mail from DNR spokesman Hoy Murphy.

The teen was wearing blaze orange and was in the presence of his father when he was shot, Murphy said.

The boy was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg, where he was treated, Murphy said. Inclement weather delayed until Friday his flight to Children's National Medical Center.

The DNR is investigating the incident.
