KNOXVILLE - James "Doc" W. Long, 78, of Knoxville, Md., died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born on Sept. 14, 1931, in Middletown, Md., he was the son of the late Leslie H. and Nellie (Routzahn) Long.

Mr. Long was a veteran of the the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.

Doc was employed as a milk truck driver for 40 years, having worked for the Dairymen Co. and the Maryland Co-op. For the past five years, he was employed with the Superfresh in Brunswick, Md.


Mr. Long was a member of the Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10 in Boonsboro and the Boonsboro Family Worship Center.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty J. (Paulsgrove) Long; three daughters, Brenda Shirley of Fredericksburg, Va., Rebecca and her husband Robert Nelson of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Carolyn and her husband Rick Decker of Cumberland, Md.; one son, Jeff McDonald and his wife Peggy of Stephenson, Va.; three grandsons, Ricky Shirley Jr. and his wife Becky, Jacob Nelson, and Jason McDonald and his wife Callie; four granddaughters, Brittany and her husband Chris, Allyson and Ashela Decker, and Heather McDonald; one great-grandson Jay McDonald; one great-granddaughter Lexi; one brother, Leslie Long Jr. and his wife Rosetta of Middletown, Md.; and two sisters, Viola Bussard and her husband Francis of Frederick, Md., and June Marsh of Middletown, Md.

Mr. Long was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul, Maurice, Austin, Huey and Lewis, and his sisters, Betty Doub, Eleanor Blickenstaff, Iona Grossick and Marcelene Miller.

A funeral ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at Boonsboro Family Worship Center, 7605 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Md. The Rev. Jack C. Payne Jr. will officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick.

Friends may visit beginning at noon Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Md. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. There also will be viewing at the church one hour before the service Monday.
