Plaque replaced in Maugansville

The plaque at the corner of Garden View and Maugansville Road has been replaced.

The plaque honored George Mauck, who died in 1944 in the Battle of Peleliu in World War II.

George was a resident of Maugansville and had lived on that corner.

The Battle of Peleliu, code named Operation Stalemate II, was fought between the United States and Japan from September to November 1944 on the island of Peleliu. It remains one of the war's most controversial because of the island's questionable strategic value and very high death toll.
