Dr. Robert Van Liew Campbell, 92

Dr. Robert Van Liew Campbell of Hagerstown, age 92, died Nov. 18, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 8, 1917, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Dr. W.D. Campbell and Marie (Parsons) Campbell.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School in 1934 and Duke Medical School in 1940. He served his internship at Baltimore City Hospital. He practiced general medicine in Hagerstown for 50 years, retiring in 1991. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 and was stationed in Jamaica and the Panama Canal Zone. He was a member of the Washington County Medical Society and served as president in 1963. He was an emeritus member of The Medical Faculty of Maryland and served as president in 1965. He was delegate to the American Medical Association for 18 years. Dr. Campbell was on the staff of the Washington County Hospital and also served as president.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Anne Campbell; two sons, William Van Liew Campbell of Hagerstown and Robert Bradlee Campbell of Houston, Texas; daughter-in-law, Kerry McChesney Campbell of Houston, Texas; and three grandchildren, William Van Liew Campbell II of Hagerstown, and Jennifer Bradlee Campbell and Bryce Kittinger Campbell, both of Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Edgar Thrall Campbell, William Parsons Campbell, James Alan Campbell and Thomas Warren Campbell.
