Mail Call

November 25, 2009

"I'd like to direct to the callers out there, with Thanksgiving coming up in a few days, it's not about receiving, it's about giving, and it's nice to reflect on how people should think of one another, and think of those less fortunate and be happy for what we all have, because we all have something to be thankful for. ... I just want to say Happy Thanksgiving, everybody out there in the community, and remember, it's better to give than to receive."

- Hagerstown

"To the Hagerstown caller: Let me be one of the first to stand in line supporting an NFL team to be named the Palefaces. A name, like the Redskins, that reflects the strength, bravery, and character of those who came before us. Where can I get a jersey?"

- Williamsport

"I'm looking at today's paper, which is Friday, Nov. 20, a picture of Greencastle's decorations for their streets. Hagerstown ought to take a lesson and get something new and innovative like that."

"Child rape and murder is becoming the norm in our world. It's time to put the death penalty in every state, and then use it when someone commits a horrendous crime against a child. There should be no appeals for a person who hurts or murders a child - none."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"All right, you Hagerstonians, I've been telling you over and over to fly the American flag on the appropriate days, and as usual, I only see one in my neighborhood, and it's mine. Are you people ashamed, or do you belong to a different tribe?"

- Hagerstown

"With all the frivolous spending our Hagerstown City Council does, couldn't they come up with some better Christmas decorations? Same old thing, year after year after year after year. Some garland and some crooked lights wrapped around a pole that the bums downtown eventually pull off and unhook, year after year. Clear Spring, Funkstown, even Greencastle really get in the holiday spirit, but not the downtown Hagerstown."

- Hagerstown

"I wonder, if people would put the time and effort into praising God and living by God's rules as they do being a fan of Michael Jackson or anybody else out there, if this world would be in the shape that it's in now. I don't think so."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"After 15 years, I lost my job. Thanks, Obama. Thanks for nothing. One less person to pay for your useless, lame health care plan that's gonna cost us millions and trillions of dollars."

- Saint James Village, North

"The Republicans keep saying that the people are against the health reform, but poll after poll shows the majority of Americans are for health reform. That's why Barack Obama was elected, with the largest voter count in more than 20 years. They say that it'll run up the deficit and they need to bring the deficit down, but there was zero deficit when George Bush came to office, and it was the Republicans with their tax cuts and their unneeded war."

- Sharpsburg

"Sharpsburg caller, I think your college forced you to buy their health insurance mainly in order to make money, because people of college age tend to be generally quite healthy, with few if any of the expensive chronic health problems of older people; hence, few claims, and having health insurance won't stop college students from those actions - abusing drugs and alcohol, unsafe driving and so on - that actually do cause most of their health problems."

- Frederick, Md.

"You know, I don't pay that much attention to politics too much, but I do somewhat, but it bothers me that everybody worried about my great-grandkids when they get older, how things are gonna be, the country's gonna go bankrupt and this and that, but I tell you what worries me more than that is that the radicals that they're elected to the Congress of the U.S. and in the Senate, especially one on the right wing side ... so that worries me more than anything for my great-grandkids."

- Hagerstown

"I'm looking at Thursday's paper, and there's a Mail Call saying that liberals hate NASCAR. Well, you're right, I hate NASCAR. I also hate the way our government is run and how bad it is going right now. I hate the way animals are treated. But what I hate the most right now is people who dislike others because of their beliefs, which is exactly what you are doing."

- Hagerstown

"Don't any of these Republican politicians have a mind of their own? There's something seriously wrong when they all vote the same way, like robots."

- Hagerstown

"These problems that have been discussed in Mail Call for the past few weeks about the county jail, problems with the commissary, the problems with hot water - things like this have not just begun. These started three years ago, when the county jail and the staff there began to be ignored. ... These are ongoing problems."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about Leonard Pitts' letter about Sammy Sosa. That was a great letter. All I can add to that is 'Right on.' I'm in total agreement."

- Hagerstown
