Remembrance

November 25, 2009

Sen. Donald Munson, right, shakes hands with Douglas Gardner on Veterans Day in front of the Washington County Courthouse where Gardner's uncle, Garland Gardner's name appears on the memorial. Gardner's uncle and his father, Leo Gardner, from Keedysville, were on two different ships during World War II, three days apart on their way from New York to Italy, where the brothers were going to meet. But Garland's ship was bombed on the fantail, where he and his crew were killed at their duty station. They were lost at sea.
