Mail Call

November 25, 2009

"Oprah for president." - Hagerstown

"I don't think Lou Dobbs is against immigration. I think what he is against is illegal immigration. Of course this country was started with immigrants. That's what we all were, but we were not illegal at the time, and we did not - did not take away from the people of the country that they're illegally immigrating to." - Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I'm calling about the situation with they found the body of Shaniya Davis, a missing 5-year-old girl from North Carolina. ... We need to band together and when there's questionable activity, people need to get involved. Otherwise terrible things like this happen. I feel for the girl and the family that cared about her, and for us as a society, and let's prevent this from happening again." - Hagerstown

"I don't understand how you're supposed to find a job. The economy's bad as it is, and then employers do background checks, credit checks, everything. Background checks should only be submitted if you're dealing with money. ... When you get in trouble and everything, you're supposed to deserve a second chance, and a lot of employers don't give second chances, and that's why people go do the same thing that they got in trouble for." - Clear Spring

"This is for the East End caller who's complaining about the lack of shopping. Good grief, I'm in the East End, and the last thing in the world we need is more shopping and more traffic and more congestion in the East End. Keep it in other parts of the county, and we'll all be happy." - Hagerstown

"I really hope they do consider putting the veterans center out at the old Hagerstown Washington County Hospital. It would be so convenient for the veterans in this area, and maybe even the Tri-State area. My husband travels down there to Martinsburg quite frequently, and that's a 60-mile trip, round trip." - Hagerstown

"On Nov. 11, Veterans Day, the day we honor those who have fought and died for our freedoms, I was appalled to read in Mail Call that a caller was demanding The Herald-Mail not publish any calls from anyone who criticized the president; and furthermore, those who would do so should leave the country. How arrogant. ... Members of my family have fought and died for this country, so that those who disagree with their government can do so without fear." - Clear Spring

"I'm 53, I'm a retired Army sergeant first class. My father - you did an article on him in the newspaper about D-Day. But the one thing I can say about this president we have, he's a radical. He doesn't have any idea what he's doing, and that's all I have to say." - Williamsport

"What's everyone's problem with the Christmas decorations going up before Thanksgiving? Is there some kind of rule written somewhere that you can't put them up until after Thanksgiving? I mean, it costs people a lot of money and a lot of labor to put them up, and they're beautiful. I think the people need to find something to complain about, really. Christmas decorations are beautiful." - Hagerstown

"I was just wondering if anybody knew if there was any rules to the high school basketball teams having practice until 10:30 at night. I was very upset when I had to pick my child up at 10:30 at night, and have to get him home and have him ready for school the next morning. Anybody know any rules about how late they can practice at Washington County schools?" - Clear Spring

"The Washington County Commissioners are starting to work on next year's budget. It's time for the citizens of Washington County to call or e-mail the Washington County Commissioners, letting them know exactly what you want in the budget; for instance, eradicating the debt and lowering your taxes." - Washington County

"Obama has been president for 11 months, and has done a lot of damage to our country and the economy. I hate to think of what he will do in the next 11 months." - Hagerstown

"I would like to thank the nice gentleman who helped me out at Sav-A-Lot the other day when I ran a little short. It meant so much to me, the nice gentleman. I hope you have many good deeds in your day, and I'm sure you do. Thanks a lot." - Williamsport

"This is about the caller upset over the 'Christmas people' with their lights on already, and how they should turn them off until Black Friday. Really? That bothers you so much that you would take the time to write or call Mail Call?" - Hagerstown

"My daughter attends the second grade at Maugansville Elementary. Her class will begin cursive writing lessons after winter break. She is very excited. I, however, cannot believe they are wasting the children's time with this outdated and obsolete form of communication. Perhaps the Hagerstown caller who is upset that her children did not learn this yearns for the good old days of old-fashioned letter writing, but I would be more interested in seeing my children learn typing and other computer skills." - Hagerstown

"If anyone should get the H1N1 vaccine free (it) is the correctional officers and the support staff. If the employees become sick, who will be there to do their jobs? Another thing, why are the state employees getting furloughed and salary cuts? I never see anything about the federal, county or city employees taking cuts." - Hagerstown
