Phyllis Griffith, 81, of Hagerstown, Md., died peacefully on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at The Village at Robinwood with her family at her side.

Phyllis was born May 30, 1928, in Sharon, Pa., and was the daughter of the late William I. Williams and Mary E. Williams of Farrell, Pa.

She was the beloved wife of John L. Griffith Jr., her husband of 58 years.

She was a 1950 graduate of Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in speech therapy and took graduate classes with emphasis on reading resources at Western Maryland.


She taught in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland, ending her teaching career at Fountaindale Elementary School as a second-grade teacher. She was employed for 21 years, retiring in 1993. She was affiliated with the Retired Teachers Association of Washington County, Md.

She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Williamsport, Md., serving on the Presbyterian Women and Church Capital Campaign and was a church usher.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her son, Richard K. Griffith his wife, Nancy B. Griffith of Martinsburg, W.Va., and granddaughter, Allison N. Hartshorn and her husband Mark T. Hartshorn of Leesburg, Va. Phyllis is also survived by her son, Douglas M. Griffith and his wife, Jill C. Griffith of Frederick, Md., and their son, Sean M. Griffith and his wife Zoe Whiting of Baltimore, Md., and granddaughter Mary K. Griffith of Pittsburgh, Pa. Phyllis is also survived by her daughter, Lori S. Monnett and her husband, Mark A. Monnett of Hagerstown, Md. She will also be remembered by two nephews, William Williams and Gary Williams of Eugene, Ore., and niece, Tamara Aydelott of Bend, Ore., and their families.

Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Md., with the Rev. Mark Sandell officiating.

Family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, Md.
