National Guard member receives volunteer award

Army National Guard Master Sgt. Ronald L. Pitts was presented the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for serving as a volunteer with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense volunteer program.

The award recognizes individual dedication to volunteer service and signifies service to the community and country with distinction.

Pitts' volunteer efforts demonstrated values that make our nation strong and help to build a culture of citizenship, service and responsibility in America. His acts of kindness and decency make volunteer teams stronger by encouraging friends and family members to serve and make a difference in their communities.

He is a public affairs supervisor assigned to the Maryland National Guard at Joint Force Headquarters in Baltimore. He has served in the military for 34 years.

He is the son of John F. Pitts of Shore Drive, Largo, Fla.

His wife, Elaine, is the daughter of John T. and Frances Payne of Onley Road, Pocomoke City, Md.

Pitts graduated in 1968 from Middletown (Md.) High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1976 from Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md.
