FORT MYERS, Fla. - Peter Sabath, 89, of Fort Myers, Fla., died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, peacefully in his home with his daughter by his side.

Peter was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Waterbury, Conn., the son of the late Theodore and Anastasia Sabatowich.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Fuller Sabath.

"Uncle Pete," as he was known by everyone, served in the U.S. Army and Air Force during World War II.

He worked as supervisor at U.S. Rubber Co. in Naugatuck, Conn., and retired from the Fabric Fire Hose division in Sandy Hook, Conn.

He was a member of Washington County AMVETS Post 10, Hagerstown, Md.

He moved to Hagerstown in October 1991, and moved to Fort Myers in April 2007, to be near his daughter, Lynn.


Peter is survived by his daughter, Lynn S. Thompson of Estero, Fla.; grandson, Patrick Kelley and his wife Sherri; a great-granddaughter, and great-great granddaughter, all in Florida. Peter is also survived locally by his sister, Olga Sweeney and her husband Robert, and Peter's dear friend, Thelma Steinla. Peter is also survived by his nephew, Paul Sweeney and his wife Denise; his nephew, Steven Sweeney and his wife Julia; his nephew, James Sweeney; and his niece, Susan S. Bain and her husband Ed. Peter is also survived locally by five grand-nephews, Brandon, Evan, Alex, Aaron, and Sean; and four grand-nieces, Katelyn, Sophie, Zo and Amanda; along with many nieces and nephews in Connecticut and Michigan.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph and Theodore Sabatowich; and sisters, Anna Rewak and Mary Kosko. He was also preceded in death by his niece, Nissa Putnam.

The memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Byron Bakalis officiating.
