FREDERICK, Md. - Mrs. Martha Katharine May, 76, of Frederick and formerly of Walkersville, Md., passed away on Nov. 23, 2009, at Glade Valley Nursing Home.

She was the beloved wife of Nelson Raymond May, her husband of 58 years.

Born May 26, 1933, in Upperville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Wayland Dunaway Edwards and Carrie Bell Hall Edwards.

She graduated from Frederick High School, class of 1950, and she married Nelson May on June 3, 1951.

Martha worked for various auto dealerships in the area as office manager and accountant, beginning with Roney Motor Co., and retiring in 1995 from Jones Motor Inc. of Mount Airy.


She enjoyed working on family history, and she was the great-granddaughter of David Hall, 12th Virginia Cavalry, CSA, and a descendant of Henry Kibler, a Revolutionary War patriot. She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Conococheague Charter, Hagerstown, Md. She was also a member of the Heritage Club, NSDAR; a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Walkersville, Md.; a member of AARP; and a member of the Historical Society of Frederick County, Md.

In addition to her loving husband, Martha is survived by two daughters, Wanda D. Perkins and husband Charles, and Bonnie E. Easterday and husband Charles; a sister, Rebecca D. Johnson; a brother, John D. Edwards and wife Ann; five grandchildren, Brian Easterday, Joy Tanner, Michele Kolb, Kimberly Winters and Jason Perkins; eight great-grandchildren, Jacob Thompson, Brady Easterday, Bailey Easterday, Taylor Kolb, Samantha Perkins, Gracie Tanner, Lauren Tanner and Charlotte Tanner; sisters-in-law, Doris Edwards, Opal Edwards and Helen Edwards; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, William D. Edwards, Sarah E. Kestner, George R. Edwards, James F. Edwards and Lillian Z. Yohn.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 North in Frederick, where funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Marc Foucart will officiate. Interment will follow in the Veterans Garden of Honor I at Resthaven. Pallbearers will be Brian Easterday, Robert Kolb, Jason Perkins, Chris Tanner, Marc Winters and Steve Elkins.

Floral tributes are welcome, or donations may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 19 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Walkersville, MD 21793.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody P.A. in Frederick.

Martha's family would like to extend a special thanks to Vicki Lydard, a loving friend and caregiver; also a special thanks to the staff and caregivers for all their loving care at Somerford Place and Glade Valley Nursing Home.
