Fire destroys home in Greencastle area

November 24, 2009

GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- Firefighters spent more than three hours late Monday battling a blaze that gutted a two-story home on Worleytown Road.

A passerby reported the fire in the 13000 block of Worleytown Road just after 11 p.m. Monday. The first floor of the single-family home was engulfed when firefighters arrived, Lt. Tim Mowen of Rescue Hose Co. 1 in Greencastle said.

Crews from Long Meadow, Marion, Franklin County, Washington County Emergency Services and Hagerstown Community Rescue Service assisted with the fire.

The last crews left the scene at 3:06 a.m.

Mowen said the building likely would be a total loss, although the structure remained standing.

The state fire marshal's office will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, Mowen said.

The house was vacant, but firefighters believed there might have been utilities turned on at the time the fire started, Mowen said.
