Hagerstown resident receives scholarship from SECU credit union

November 23, 2009

LINTHICUM, Md. - Shane A. Burkett of Hagerstown has been named a recipient of a scholarship from SECU, a credit union in Maryland.

In July, 10 students from across the state were given scholarships totaling $30,000. To qualify, applicants were required to submit an essay that covered one of three topics. Winners were chosen from the most thoughtful, creative and well-written responses.

Now, those winners have been given an opportunity to receive tuition support for the second semester. They were presented with another essay question, and those who chose to respond were awarded an additional $1,000.

SECU's scholarship program fulfills several purposes. SECU has always been committed to financial education throughout Maryland, and offers many educational programs geared to students and adults. The program also reinforces SECU's desire to give back to the community.

"We are supporting Maryland families. This effort helps make the dream of higher education a reality and less of a burden," said Rod Staatz, SECU president and CEO.

SECU intends to offer the scholarship program again in 2010. For more information, go to www.secumd.org in early spring.

SECU Credit Union was founded in Baltimore in 1951 and is the largest state-chartered credit union in Maryland. SECU is ranked among the top 75 credit unions for total assets in the U.S. As of September, its assets were $2 billion.
