Hollyfest, tree lighting set for Monday

HAGERSTOWN -- The City of Hagerstown will host its annual tree-lighting ceremony Monday at 5 p.m. at Public Square.

The ceremony will be followed by the 20th annual Hollyfest at 7 p.m. at The Maryland Theatre.

Both events are free. Tickets are not required for Hollyfest.

This year's tree is a 30-foot blue spruce donated by Vicki Shirley.

Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II and Michael Thorsen, principal of the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, will turn on the tree's lights at 6 p.m.

The North Hagerstown and South Hagerstown high school bands will perform, and members of Girls Inc. will sing Christmas carols at the ceremony. Santa's elves will painting faces and making balloon sculptures, and M&T Bank will provide free hot chocolate and refreshments.

A variety of local youth musical groups and dance ensembles will perform at Hollyfest. Audreanna Colombo, Miss Washington County Outstanding Teen, will read "The Night Before Christmas," and the Dean of Magic and Santa Claus will appear at the event.
