November 22, 2009

BOONSBORO -- A College Park, Md., woman was taken to Washington County Hospital with serious, but nonlife-threatening injuries Sunday after a morning accident on Interstate 70, Maryland State Police said.

Arifi Noman Mahammed Waked, 26, was driving a 2008 Honda Accord west on I-70, coming down South Mountain near the exit for Md. 66, when the car went off the right side of the road and hit a guardrail, police said.

The car spun back into the travel lanes and was hit by a 2009 Western Star rail service truck driven by Darrell D. Walters, 34, of Proctorville, Ohio, police said.

The accident was reported at 8:39 a.m., a 911 dispatcher said.

Waked was pinned inside the car but helped out by firefighters, police said.

Walters refused medical treatment, police said.

Waked was charged with negligent driving, police said.

The slow lane of westbound I-70 was closed for almost an hour.
