MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Stephen P. Kulina, 48, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in Washington County, Md., as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born Dec. 6, 1960, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he was a son of Joseph Stephen Kulina Sr. of Martinsburg, W.Va., and the late Marlene Lehman Kulina.

Stephen was a 1980 graduate of Walkersville (Md.) High School and graduated as a Journeyman Sheet Metal Worker with top honors in his class from Sheet Metal Workers International Local 100. He currently served as vice-president of operations/owner of ALL-SHRED Inc., Frederick, Md., and was formerly the president of Kulina Enterprises Inc., also in Frederick. He was named Established Entrepreneur of the Year in 1998 by the Entrepreneur Council of Frederick.


An aviation and aeronautics enthusiast, Stephen was pursuing a career in flight. He attended the Frederick Flight Center and received his private pilot's license from the Rider Jet Center, a division of Eagle Air in Hagerstown, Md.

Stephen was raised in the Catholic faith and enjoyed attending Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and had a great love for science and astronomy. Stephen was a motorcycle enthusiast, particularly enjoying Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Pat Hane Kulina, whom he married Sept. 2, 1989; four non-human children, 1st Cat, Tom, Sunset and Southpaw; two brothers, Paul J. Kulina and wife, Linda, and Joseph S. Kulina Jr. and wife, Jill; nephew, Richard Kulina, his wife, Murissa, and their children, Coulby and Caroline; niece, Julia Kulina; and nephew, Michael Kulina, all of Myersville, Md. Stephen is also survived by his mother-in-law, Dorothea Jasper Hane of Chambersburg, Pa.; and brothers and sisters-in law, Jeanette Mendonca and husband, Patrick, of Damascus, Md., Pamela Earhart and husband, Robert, of Falmouth, Va., James W. Hane Jr. of Boonsboro, Md., Michael O. Hane and wife, Joan, of Gettysburg, Pa. and Margaret Holbert and husband, Arlie, of Genessee, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Peter Kulina; and his father-in-law, James W. Hane, with whom he had a very close relationship.

Stephen will be missed by the ALL-SHRED Team whom he loved very much.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. James R. O'Brien at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at Corpus Christi Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Stephen's name be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 2325 Country Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 or for scientific research to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the National Air and Space Administration, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, CA 91109.
