Decking the holiday halls at the Greens Show

November 19, 2009|By CHRIS COPLEY

The Crossroads Garden Club's Greens Show will take place Sunday at the Women's Club, 31 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown. Tim Valerio of Village Florist will create Thanksgiving and Christmas centerpieces beginning at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22.

Tickets cost $10, and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served.

Valerio said he will make two Thanksgiving pieces and half a dozen Christmas pieces during the show.

Valerio highlighted two holiday-decorating approaches he uses. He said he likes to start with mixed greens - such as spruce, fir, cypress, magnolia and holly - for texture.

For a traditional, Colonial look, he adds pine cones, fresh apples and pears, and dried berries. For a more contemporary look, Valerio said he might use a silver-and-gold palette, round tree ornaments and sparkly or metalic finishes.

To add a wintry touch to a design, Valerio said he adds bare twigs - natural-colored for a traditional arrangement, spray-painted gold for a contemporary arrangement. If someone wants to add fresh flowers to an arrangement, Valerio suggested red flowers - amaryllises, roses or carnations - for a traditional look; or white flowers for a contemporary theme.
