Busch: Third USM-H battle unlikely

November 18, 2009|By ANDREW SCHOTZ

After touring the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown on Wednesday, Maryland House Speaker Michael E. Busch said he doesn't expect a third tug of war over the center's budget.

The last two legislative sessions, as Del. John L. Bohanan Jr., D-St. Mary's, pushed for equitable higher education funding outside the University System, USM-H has been a target.

But, both times, all of the center's funding, or close to it, was restored before the end of the session.

"The center plays a key role to the vitality of Hagerstown," Busch, D-Anne Arundel, said. "It's more than just an education center -- it's part of a redevelopment and renaissance of downtown Hagerstown."

Busch said Bohanan has raised good points, but "we've tried to facilitate a compromise. Hopefully, the issue has been resolved."
