Mail Call

November 18, 2009

"I would just like to say kudos to Lynn Jones for all she's doing for the troops. Her and her helpers are doing a great job. Keep up the good work, Lynn."

- Smithsburg

"I'm calling in reference to the prisoners we have here, and basically, the problem is our guards have been seeing a decrease in their salary and another decrease is coming here soon, and I find it hard to believe that we are going to be giving free swine flu vaccinations, but the prison guards have to pay for them. I mean, you've already cut their pay. Maybe it's time for the prisoners to start paying their way."

- Williamsport

"Instead of them selling the hospital, old hospital, or having it demolished, with all these homeless people in Washington County and the homeless vets, why couldn't they reconvert that for the homeless, or make a vet hospital, veterans hospital out of it?"

-Washington County

"The heck with the ugly men, and beautiful men and handsome men. How about the decent men? There are none around. On the outside they may look beautiful, but on the inside, they're dogs, d-o-g-s. I wish you'd print this, because I found one 55 years ago, but believe me, there's nobody like that in the world now."

- Washington County

"Regarding the intersection at the YMCA and Chartridge Drive, maybe 'no left turn' at the busy hours might be appropriate. It might also anger a lot of people, but what is better, dead people or angry people?"

- Hagerstown

"I just want to say thank you to my granddaughter, Dakota Vaughn, for the beautiful article on our veterans in yesterday's paper. Your pappy, having been a veteran, would be very proud of you."

- Hagerstown

"Isn't it a shame that we all could have gone out and committed a crime and been in the prisons, MCTC, RCI, MCI, and be able to have an H1N1 shot? I find that absolutely ridiculous. I think that people who have not committed crimes should be able to get the shot before we give them to anybody in the prison system. We still have people that need the H1N1 shot because they have health risks."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the cute man driving the Geo, from Sharpsburg. Just don't let that arm of yours be broke off by patting yourself on the back, because you got a long ways to go."

- Hagerstown

"Please, 'TMZ' and 'Access Hollywood,' enough already. Shut up about the Lohans, and Jon and Kate."

- Boonsboro

"This is on Community Rescue hiring. I think the nine people that the County Commissioners voted on in 2007, hiring them should be delayed until our economy gets better and until people get jobs. I donate to the county rescue (service), but that $560,000, they better hold off and save it, because the economy's so bad now and it's gonna get worse. Instead of raising taxes, that $560,000 could be spent someplace else."

- Hagerstown

"There go the Orioles fans again, claiming the Yankees bought the World Series. How soon they forget. They forget Glenn Davis, Javy Lopez, Miguel Tejada, and the list goes on and on. The only difference is the Yankees shop at good stores."

- Hagerstown

"I happen to disagree about the comment about the putting your money back quickly and needing to be in a hurry. There are people that are physically unable to do that, and I think people today need to have patience, meaning people waiting in line, and also the servers that are serving people such as myself. Give me enough time to - when I pay you, I'm still a customer - to put my money back in my wallet before you wait on the next person."

- Hagerstown

"Men and women in Maryland detention center for DUI do get counseling for their addiction, do their time, and when released, hit a brick wall. Employers want clean driving records. Unlike rape, robbery and murder, addiction can be tested. Judge, take the counseling and prove it works. Only one who has been there understands. And the first-time DUI should go to jail. Then they know what's in for them."

- Warfordsburg, Pa.

"I'd like to know if people over 75 with incomes under $20,000 have to file income tax."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in regards to the Alsatia parade. It was advertised in the paper that the parade would wind up at Wilson Boulevard, and I'm 83 years old, I'm handicapped, I found a place to park so that I could watch the parade. Parade never came past. I was wondering what the problem was. That's about all I can say about it."

- Boonsboro

"What gives the government the right to fine us if we don't have health insurance? A Hagerstown caller asks. You know they already penalize us if we don't have car insurance and drive a car, right? Why aren't you screaming about that, too? And once this health insurance bill takes effect, health insurance reform bill takes effect, most people will be able to afford insurance. That's the whole point behind it."

- Waynesboro, Pa.
