Man found not guilty in Hagerstown stabbing

November 18, 2009

A Hagerstown man charged with stabbing another man in June was found not guilty after a jury trial last week in Washington County Circuit Court.

Samuel Lee Taggart Jr., 46, of 55 Avalon Ave., was found not guilty of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, court records show.

He was acquitted of a first-degree assault charge during the Nov. 5 trial.

The stabbing occurred June 21, when Hagerstown police found the victim in the 100 block of East Antietam Street. He had a half-inch puncture wound in the left side of his chest, and identified Taggart as the assailant, court records show.

Taggart told police he acted in self-defense, saying the two had been arguing and the other man pulled out a key that he mistook for a knife, court records show.
