Girl, 8, asks friends to bring items for animals to birthday party

November 14, 2009

Peggy Mothershed didn't want to be the only one to receive presents on her eighth birthday, so she asked her mother, Hope, to include a note with her party invitations asking that guests also bring an item to donate to the Humane Society of Washington County.

On Oct. 29, Peggy and Hope delivered a box full of pet food and treats to the shelter.

The inspiration for Peggy's generosity comes from her love for the animals she hopes to work with someday.

"I have three things I'd like to do. I'd like to be an animal illustrator, work at a zoo or do something with underwater animals. They're my favorite," Peggy said.

She has two cats - Callie and Rio - and also likes dogs and tigers.

Hope was proud that her daughter's birthday party became a way to help homeless animals.

"I was very happy that she wanted to do this and that everyone at the party, about 12 or 14 kids, all brought something," Hope said.
