Harpers Ferry man killed in accident identified

November 12, 2009

MIDDLEWAY, W.Va. -- A man killed Wednesday night in a head-on collision on W.Va. 51 was identified by police Thursday as Robert Lawrence Brown, 69, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

The 1993 Toyota Camry that Brown was driving east on W.Va. 51 toward Charles Town crossed the center line and collided with a westbound 2001 Dodge Durango near Images nightclub, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Robert E. "Bobby" Shirley.

The accident was reported at 6:54 p.m.

The driver of the Dodge Durango, Nikisha Williams, 32, was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police. Shirley said Williams was responsive and talking at the accident scene.

It was not clear what caused Brown to cross the center line, Shirley said.

The collision left evidence of a "very heavy impact," but Shirley said he did not believe speed was a factor in the accident that occurred on a straight portion of the road

Emergency workers used equipment to remove both Brown and Williams from the vehicles, Shirley said.

The accident investigation and removal of wreckage and scattered debris forced traffic to be diverted from W.Va. 51 for a few hours, Shirley said.

Brown was pronounced dead at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va., Shirley said. An autopsy of his body has been requested.
