Mail Call

November 12, 2009

"I recently came back from the Valley Mall via 81 and 70. I had thought they had closed that for many months and spent a lot of money on improving that intersection, and it doesn't look any different to me than it did a year ago when I last made that unsafe transition from 81 to 70. So what gives? What was that money spent for? How much time was it closed that it ended up turning out the same?"

"I hope there's a contest to pick the cutest guy in Sharpsburg, and I know who it would be. He drives a little maroon Geo, and he's all over the place all the time, and the reason I know that it would be him is because it's me."

-- Sharpsburg

"I'd like to compliment Tim on his column about baseball that was published in your Sunday paper. Right on. I think the Yankee pinstripes on their uniforms should be replaced with a dollar sign."

"I'm reading the paper this morning and hearing on the radio, TV, where Joseph Lieberman, turncoat, is, wants to have a hearing to see what happened out at Ford Hood, Texas. Everybody knows what happened out there, and all he does is want to get the limelight."

-- Hagerstown

"Persons in our community who are an example of education and respect have once again made it harder for us parents to teach our teens right from wrong. Along with celebrities, athletes and political figures, our children get the message that it is all right to drink and drive, get money illegally, lie, and engage in sexual indiscretions. And all we do is say 'I'm sorry, I'll get therapy.' These public figures who are looked up to and decide to make bad choices should remove themselves from the public arena."

"To the caller on the East End saying they are lacking necessities: You've got a big Martin's, a big CVS, a couple gas stations, a couple banks, a couple restaurants, and the next exit out I-70 is Prime Outlets. ... Be thankful for what you have."

-- North End

"Never mind about the ugly men. What about the decent men? I'm a single woman, and it's hard to find a decent person who can look beyond your physical disabilities. So let's stop this nonsense with the superficial about where's the handsome men. A person, you gotta look on the inside. There are plenty of good-looking people on the outside, but inside they're horrible."

"I want to know, right out, what, how much money has been robbed from Social Security over the years and the last year, and when is it to be paid back? Soon, I hope."

-- Williamsport

"Whoever designed the YMCA made a big mistake. If the driveway would be on the western side of the building instead of where it is now, you would have a clear view ... in both directions to enter the Eastern Boulevard. It would be a lot cheaper to correct that driveway, rather than the other options being mentioned."

"This is in reference to the caller who called from Funkstown on Monday, Nov. 9, about the dispensary and the commissary at the detention center. I disagree with them completely. These people committed a crime. They deserve to be where they're at -- in jail. We are keeping them, feeding them three meals a day, providing them with their necessities, a roof over their head, heat in the winter and cool air in the summer. They have water to take a shower. They don't need medical accessories for things that are not life-threatening."

"A special word of thanks to the Hagerstown Choral Arts for their fine performance this past Sunday at the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, and another special thanks to director Greg Shook and accompanist Daniel Miller for their fine assistance."

"Let me get this straight. There's three Americans being held by an unfriendly country because they were trespassing. Well, duh. It's just like we treat foreigners in this country -- and of course, we should -- if they're suspicious, you lock them up. I have no sympathy for those Americans that were over there supposedly hiking. If that's all they were up to, why didn't they stay in the U.S. and hike our nature trails over here? Why go clear over there?"

-- Hagerstown

"This is about the business with the flu vaccine. According to the Washington Post, in Thursday, Nov. 5's edition of the main section of the paper, the chief reason there's so little flu vaccine is the novel H1N1 grows slowly in fertilized chicken eggs, a medium where it's made in industrial quantities. It's the fault of the biology of the virus. It has absolutely nothing to do with human laziness, incompetence -- and all about the biology of the virus."

-- Hagerstown

"One quick fix for the intersection of Eastern Boulevard and the YMCA: Only allow right turns coming out of the YMCA. That should cut down on at least a number of the accidents, and then they can look at further things to help out. Only allow right turns out of the YMCA."

-- Hagerstown
