Mail Call

November 11, 2009

"Congratulations, New York Yankees, on their 27th world championship. That's one thing about Yankee fans - you always see their hats and stuff out, even in the seasons when they're not winning or not in the playoffs, or any time. You always see Yankee hats. What ever happened to big Red Sox nation? Man, when they won those two world championships, that's all you saw, Red Sox hats everywhere. Now I don't see any. Wonder why. Way to go, Yankees."

- Chewsville

"Don't know about you, but there are two words that have lost all meaning to me: 'amazing' and 'unbelievable.' Hope they soon find some new exciting words to use on TV, as I am tired of these two. If I were an announcer, I would look for words of my own and not ones everyone else were using. I believe everything I see on TV and in person, but not some pictures on the Internet, as a lot of them are altered and unbelievable."

"Obama is no FDR. Yes, there's jobs on the roads, guardrails that we don't need, new drainage and new bridges, but we the people of America need jobs. FDR looked out for the American people. Mr. Obama, I respect you as the president of the U.S., so do the same for the American people. Respect us, and give us jobs."

- Warfordsburg, Pa.

"Did it ever occur to you out there that the world condones what Obama is doing? That's why they gave him the Nobel Peace Prize. They like his openness and his communication with other countries. It's the end of the era, 'My way or the highway.' I mean, that's what Bush represented, and the world didn't condone that."

- Boonsboro

"I see where both Pennsylvania and West Virginia are trying to now get table games for their casinos. Here we go again. Maryland right between these two states, and as usual, 10 years behind them. Maryland is still trying to get the slots up and running. Do you realize how many millions of dollars this state has lost in the past several years? Maybe the state wouldn't be having nearly the budget problems it has if, again, we wouldn't be always behind. We already blew it with the slots."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to recommend Winnie in the Circulation Department for Herald-Mail Employee of the Year, if there is such a thing. That young lady not only does a wonderful job, she is always so pleasant, and she cares. It is just so wonderful to deal with someone like her. Thank you, Winnie."

- Sharpsburg

"Hey, I got one for you. See, once upon a time there was a politician/used car salesman. Oh, wait a minute. That's not a joke, is it?"

- Hagerstown

"I want to say congratulations to the parents of the young 14-year-old from Clear Spring who wrote an article in Mail Call on 10/30/09. You are raising your child to think and be proud of the country he lives in, the United States of America. He hit the nail on the head after reading his book about our government, and is correct in stating that Obama is doing the exact opposite of how our government is set up. I think it is time for us that are able make a stand for what our country used to be when election times comes up in 2010. I hope this young fellow continues to realize what is happening every day the way the president and all the Congress are going against what is stated in our United States Constitution of America."

- Hagerstown

"In response to Shepherdstown, who told Clear Spring to get a life because her son realized we are moving far away from what the founding fathers intended: Is it really necessary to be so nasty? Clear Spring has a right to speak, as do you. Why try to silence someone who disagrees with the direction the country is heading? And you guys call us 'hate mongers.'"

- Smithsburg

"I'm calling concerning the comments about the president and the first lady. I think The Herald-Mail needs to quit writing, publishing all these hate mails about the president. After all, he is the president of the U.S. If they can't stand the president of the U.S., then they need to get out of this country."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the caller who said something about the prisoners at Washington County Detention Center having a hard time because they can't buy their Twinkies, take nice, long hot showers, and can't call people on the telephones because the phones have been down. Well, I guess they should have thought about that before they committed their crimes."

- Hagerstown

"I have a small question. I paid into Medicare and Social Security every week, and now they say Social Security and Medicare is going broke. I never paid into welfare - why isn't welfare broke? And one more question: When they started Social Security, that was for people to put money in and get it out when you're 62, 65 years old. Well, how come we that put money in it are paying for people that have a learning disability? ... That's why Social Security's going broke."

- Williamsport

"I want to thank you for the fine editorial on accountability in fire company bingo operations. I'm giving the emergency services system 60 days to address the problem of lack of financial accountability in the companies. If nothing is done to confront this problem, I'll be contacting the governor's office and also the Maryland State Attorney General's office."

- Hagerstown

"I would like to thank Old Forge Elementary School and the Smithsburg schools for honoring their school bus drivers during School Bus Safety Week. That was so nice of you to think of them."

- Hagerstown

"To the Hagerstown caller who threatens to write down tag numbers and call the U.S. Secret Service on anyone who thinks the president should be assassinated: I agree with you that this kind of hatred is uncalled for. ... Where were you all the years that George Bush was threatened? Did you record tag numbers and report them to the U.S. Secret Service then? I think not."

- Hagerstown
