Woman flown from I-81 crash near Martinsburg

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A woman was airlifted from the scene of an single-vehicle accident Tuesday night on northbound Interstate 81 near Martinsburg, the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The accident occurred at about 9:30 p.m., when the vehicle left the highway near the 16-mile marker (W.Va. 9), went down a small embankment and struck a tree sideways at the driver's door, the release said.

The unidentified woman, who was alone in the vehicle, was trapped in the wreckage and had to be cut out by emergency medical personnel, the release said.

I-81 was closed for about 40 minutes after the accident, the release said.
