Frederick Allen "Fred" Bennett, 79

Frederick Allen "Fred" Bennett, 79, retired Sergeant 1st Class, died Nov. 9, 2009, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center surrounded by his family. He resided in Laurel, Md., since 1964 and moved to Hagerstown, Md., with his daughter in July 2007.

Mr. Bennett served in the U.S. Army and retired as Sergeant 1st Class. He worked as chemical staff specialist and served in Japan, Germany and in the Korean War. Later, he retired as an owner/operator from a tractor-trailer company. He loved to cook and spend time with his family.

Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his wife, Betty M. Bennett of 27 years; his parents, John and Velma Bennett; and a brother, Robert Bennett.

He is survived by his daughter, Sharon B. Metzner and her husband, Lewis; grandson, Kenneth Cowher of Hagerstown; stepdaughter, Pat Wood and her husband, Carl, of Laurel; stepson, Steve Meredith and his wife, Sue, of Centerville, Md.; and brother, William Bennett and his wife, Nancy, of Waverly, N.Y. He also is survived by grandchildren, Holly Wood of Laurel, Joe Wood and wife, Christine, of Clarksville, Md., and Jim Meredith and wife, Melanie, of Centerville, Md.; five great-grandchildren; niece, Billie Jo Bennett of Waverly; and several nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, from 11 a.m. to noon at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A., 313 Talbott Ave., Laurel, MD 20707 where services will begin at noon with Chaplain Randy Haycock officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Laurel.
