Mail Call

November 10, 2009

"The photo on the front page of The Herald-Mail showed a young boy getting the H1N1 flu shot at the Washington County Health Department. It then stated that he was from Myersville, Md. Well, in case you all don't know it, Myersville is in Frederick County, Md., and they do have a health department over there in Frederick. I know that it said they didn't turn anyone away, but what happens when Washington County runs out of the vaccine?"

- Smithsburg

"If someone asks for help from the federal government to avoid military service, are they a socialist or a pinhead?"

- Hagerstown

"On Tuesday, Nov. 3, my daughter's home was burglarized. She lives at the corner of North Mulberry and North Street. If anyone saw someone carrying out a big-screen TV or PlayStation games, please call the police department to report what you saw."

- Downsville

"I see in Wednesday's Mail Call where someone said that they could use the old hospital for a veterans home. Well, that's one of the best ideas I've heard. It's not a handout. They've paid their ways, and it's not out of taxpayers' money."

"I just want to inform the people calling about fathers not working and are paying child support, and I'm a mother, single mother who receives child support for one and pays child support for another one. The food stamps that I get, I get because it's needed. I work a full-time job - 50 hours or more a week - and it's been like that for the past six years. Food stamps is given to people that need it. Not everyone is on welfare."

- Hagerstown

"People on Independence Road who have cats and allow them to roam, if you really love them, you'd better gather them up and keep them inside. That's where they belong."

- Clear Spring

"My comment is to certain parents, and you know who you are. Just because you have straight-A students doesn't mean that your kids are well-behaved. I live in Maugansville and there are children who run the streets all night long, ride their bikes all night long - and we're talking about elementary and middle school kids. ... I would think again about possibly teaching them some manners and good habits."

- Maugansville

"This is to the comment in Mail Call about the comment on the 40-, 50- and 60-year-old women who think it's OK to grocery shop in their pajamas. You must have seen the same people I did ... on Saturday afternoon."

- Boonsboro

"About the call-in about women in PJs, well, take a ride through downtown and see how many men you see in them. They are wearing the ones with football, baseball, etc. teams on them, and think it's cool. Well, ladies go ahead and wear yours, too. Some of us just don't care as long as you got clothes on."

- Hagerstown

"I want to congratulate the Maine voters for defeating the same-sex marriage proposition in their state recently."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Congratulations, Boonsboro girls varsity soccer team. We are headed to the regionals next Tuesday, against Mountain Ridge. You girls are awesome. We look forward to going to states with you. Keep up the great work."

- Boonsboro

"I was calling about that cattle mutilation I saw in the paper the other day, in Keedysville. Does anybody know anything more about that, or maybe if it was UFOs?"

- Clear Spring

"I would like to say to all the women and all the mothers of Maryland and everywhere, step up to the plate and get rid of O'Malley. I don't know who voted him in, but they have to be sorry today. Let's get rid of O'Malley."

- Smithsburg

"Oh, boo hoo to the judge in Hagerstown who got caught with a DUI. ... In my opinion, everybody he's ever convicted of drunk driving, he should have to take and reverse that. Whatever he gave them as far as for their conviction should be wiped out because he's no better."

- Brownsville

"Two comments: One about the people from West Virginia, Pennsylvania working in Washington County. They do not pay Maryland state taxes over here, but if you work here - if you live here and work in Pennsylvania, you have to pay Pennsylvania taxes. Something is not right here. Another thing, too, about the gas going up, the gas was down from last year because people conserved and didn't drive as much. Now we're back to the same old habits, so the gas goes right back up."

- Hagerstown

"We hear about this health care thing that we're supposed to get. Is it gonna be like the Medicare, when some of us pay, some of us don't? There are people in our town that go to the doctor, get all kind of tests, operations, all the medication free. They don't have to pay anything. Is this gonna be like this? Are some of us gonna pay for everything and others pay for nothing?"

- Dargan

"It's Saturday, 1:45, and I'm at the Taco Bell going toward the Valley Mall. This is to the young girl that was in the white Toyota Corolla with the fin across the back. If I wasn't a defensive driver, I would have hit you. You don't turn right on red when there's a car right there. And this is in love and care. So be careful."

- Hagerstown
